- Describes the conception, development and implementation of Goldman Sachs' five-year, $100 million philanthropic initiative to provide practical business
and management education to 10,000 women around the globe. The initiative recently celebrated its first anniversary and over 1,2000 women were either enrolled in, or graduated from sponsored certificate programs. The case addressees some key strategic decisions facing the firm as they roll-out the program over the coming years. These include: how to organize the network of schools that deliver the educational services, determining the best outside partners to provide additional services for the women entrepreneurs, how to best assess the impact of the program, and finally the extent to which the initiative provides contributions to the long-term strategy of the firm.

- La familia es como un paracaídas. Ambos envuelven y protegen.

- This technical note discusses the distance there is between power and using it effectively. It does not aim to produce a theory based on logic, nor systematize
a reality, but instead to give a brief description of the phenomenon of power among business people and executives, so as to focus on some strategic thoughts. The authors have tried to condense their own accumulated experiences from working as "Management" professors, executives and business consultants.

- A noble appeal based on the speaker¿s credibility demands respect, but respect does not necessarily arouse the right emotional response. We know that
persuasion in a crisis situation has more to do with action and emotion than rationality. Reason, therefore, must be highly tempered with emotion to achieve the right action. In Shakespeare¿s Julius Caesar, Brutus¿ speech fell widely off the mark. Mark Anthony¿s funeral speech, on the other hand, is one of the best examples of a crisis speech that one can find, because it raises the right emotions from the audience while providing them with the hard evidence they need to be convinced. The result we all know.

- This technical note begins with the resolution of the "Google and Internet Privacy" case (UVA-E-0344) (disturbed by the office reaction to him, Charlie
resigns), and then discusses the privacy issues the case addresses. Although ?personal privacy? is a difficult concept to define, academics and social commentators continue to struggle with that definition as well as the value of ?personal privacy.? For an individual, privacy is a significant factor in determining one?s autonomy and independence. This technical note discusses the concept of personal privacy from a Utilitarian and a Kantian perspective.

- Michael Pirron was a health care services consultant who had always dreamed of starting a "Nonprofit Competitive Business" with a social mission. In 2006,
he launched Impact Makers, a new hybrid entity that crossed the nonprofit/for-profit lines. Although it was a small business like many others (paying competitive salaries, bidding for work, providing professional services at market prices), Impact Makers had several unique components: It would contribute strategic consulting, and all profits, to charitable community organizations; there was no stock and equity ownership; it had a volunteer board of directors and its financial information was open to the public. The first two years saw some successes and some setbacks. Impact Makers faced the challenges of growth: how to get more customers, more revenue, and a more predictable revenue stream. How would Impact Makers raise investment capital with its unique organizational structure? And how would the company survive?
